Associate Professor Sonya Burgess is an interventional cardiologist and consultant cardiologist who also works at Nepean hospital and Sydney Southwest Private Hospital. She has a PhD, studying the treatment of ST elevation myocardial infarction, a BSc in biochemistry and an MBChB, having graduated with Distinction from the University of Otago Medical School in 2001, and from the University of New South Wales with her PhD in 2021.
Dr Burgess undertook her residency and general medicine training at Wellington hospital and worked in the United Kingdom during her general medicine training at the Royal United Hospital in Bath, Papworth Hospital in Cambridge, Southampton General Hospital, Royal Oldham Hospital, St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester, and the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton. She returned home to New Zealand in 2006 to complete her FRACP exams and advanced cardiology training at Wellington hospital. She then completed a two-year interventional fellowship at Liverpool Hospital in Sydney, and worked as a consultant cardiologist at Liverpool. She has a PhD from the University of New South Wales.
Dr Burgess specializes as a general and interventional cardiologist and her clinical interests include coronary heart disease and ST elevation myocardial infarction, multivessel disease, completeness of revascularization, heart disease in diabetes radial PCI, dual antiplatelet therapy, and heart disease in women. She has published and presented both original research and reviews in international peer reviewed journals and is regular faculty at major international and Australian cardiology conferences. Dr Burgess works at our Camden rooms on Wednesdays and provides echocardiography, exercise testing, angiography and angioplasty services and general cardiology consultation. She is a caring and dedicated doctor, who has an excellent rapport with patients, families and their general practitioners, and prides herself on providing patient centered, evidence-based care.
