Gemma Figtree is a distinguished Professor in Medicine at the University of Sydney, where she holds key leadership roles in the field of cardiovascular research and care. As the co-leader of the Cardiovascular Theme for Sydney Health Partners, a prestigious NHMRC Advanced Health Research and Translation Centre, she has established herself as a visionary in the medical community. Gemma’s academic journey began with a DPhil at Oxford University, supported by a Rhodes Scholarship, where her pioneering work uncovered fundamental insights into estrogen’s impact on the cardiovascular system. She is equally committed to clinical practice as an interventional cardiologist and translating her research into practical solutions for heart attack patients. Gemma is a principal investigator on grants totalling over $44 million, and she plays a vital role in bringing together multidisciplinary experts from around the world. She was recognised with the prestigious NHMRC Excellence Award and has received numerous accolades, including the NSW Ministerial Award for Cardiovascular Research Excellence and appointed Member of the Order of Australia.
